What If “They” Find Out I am Not Smart?!?!?
By Sydella Blatch, Wednesday, August 13, 2008

I was talking on the phone with a close friend of mine the other day.  She used the word stupid in passing.  Immediately, I could hear her six year-old son in the background correcting her, in the same manner she corrects him, by telling her it was not right to use that word.  Their conversat...

Jamaican Values and the Diaspora Movement
By Terry-Ann Smith, Thursday, July 10, 2008

There comes a time in the life of any individual when one must forego the pleasures of work and take a pilgrimage home.  In the life of this immigrant scientist, pulling away from the bench can be a daunting task.  I am always torn between the need to finish up the requirements of my project and the need to be with my family, where I can rest upon white sandy beaches with clear blue waters rushing in on the shore.

It’s been a year and a half since my last pilgrimage.&nb...

What Lies Beneath the Surface of the Red Planet?
By Daniel Santillano, Tuesday, June 10, 2008

On May 25, 2008, NASA, in collaboration with the University of Arizona, successfully landed the Phoenix Mars Lander near the north pole of Mars.  The purpose of this mission is to study the geology of the red planet, to monitor its weather, and to measure the properties of what might be ice.

Of course, wherever we find water on Earth we also detect the presence of microbial life, given how metabolically diverse they are.  So, if ice exists on this planet where men com...

Hard Work Never Ends
By Nuruddeen Lewis, Saturday, May 10, 2008

It's final exams week and students around the world are frantic. Juiced-up on caffeine and sugar, they study voraciously to end this semester with a bang.

When I recently walked into the library, I was surprised to see that almost every chair was filled with a student, nose glued to his laptop and a Venti-sized Starbucks cup in hand.

For most students, this is the worst moment of their lives. All extra-curricular activities have to wait, including maintaining their personal ...

Just Keep Running
By Sydella Blatch, Thursday, April 10, 2008

Every shallow breath I drew in scraped the back of my throat.  My legs ached with each thud on the dusty path.  I was only on my third lap.  I kept thinking, ‘I really am not an athlete.’  How can people be good at jogging?

Global Perspectives
By Terry-Ann Smith, Wednesday, March 12, 2008

It didn’t come as a surprise to me that the U.S. Presidential candidate Barack Obama won the majority of votes from Americans living outside of the U.S.

In recent times, I’ve heard many of my colleagues discuss global perspectives on health, education, climate change and U.S. politics. Colleagues at Cornell Weill Medical Center, for example, organized a one day symposium in collaboration with the New Y...
